OGAE UK was very sad to hear of the passing of Bill Martin, the songwriter behind Cliff Richard’s 1968 entry “Congratulations”, and Eurovision winner “Puppet on a String”.

The news was reported on Twitter by his long-term songwriting partner Phil Coulter.

Bill Martin was born in Glasgow in 1938 and got his first songwriting credit in 1963. is songwriting partnership with Phil Coulter was formed in 1965 and lasted for a decade. Alongside Congratulations and Puppet on a String the duo had two other UK number 1 singles – Back Home and Forever and Ever. They also wrote a further Eurovision song – Luxembourg’s “Toi”, which finished fifth at the 1975 contest in Stockholm.

In 2008 Bill was a special guest at our Eurobash in Birmingham.
