Malta win inaugural OGAEVision contest

The recent Eurovision Weekend in Berlin saw the launch of the first ever “OGAEVision Contest”, a chance for OGAE members across Europe to show off their singing talents.

In a hard-fought yet fun contest, 18 year old Sebastian Calleja from Malta was declared the winner, beating off stiff competition from countries including Portugal, Netherlands and the UK, represented by Karl William Lund, who of course took part in Eurovision You Decide earlier this year. Karl gave a strong performance of Dami Im’s Sound of Silence, and it was great to see so many votes coming the UK’s way for a change!

The OGAEVision contest was the highlight of a great weekend of Eurovision fun, in the fifth annual Eurovision weekend. Each year the Germans team up with an OGAE club across the Europe, and this year saw the Dutch fan club invited to co-host. OGAE Netherlands brought along with them a pair of true Eurovision divas, Esther Hart (2003) and Sandra Reemer (1972, 1976, 1979) who both gave fantastic performances of Eurovision hits old and new.

In addition to the Dutch ladies, the crowd were also wowed by a great performance from Laura Pinski, who took part in this year’s German national final, and this year’s Austrian act and fan favourite, Zoe.

In addition to the main concert, there was an excellent warm-up club night on the Friday, and a relaxed brunch on the Sunday. Hosted by Salman Tanzeem from the German fan club, it was a chance for a lively and illuminating Q&A with Esther, Sandra, Laura and Karl, who also gave us a fantastic intimate performance of hits from his debut album Oracle.

Well done to all the organisers, and roll on Eurovision Weekend 2017!
