OGAE UK victors in OGAE Song Contest!

OGAE UK is delighted to announce that we have WON this year’s OGAE Song Contest. The results of the annual online competition were revealed last night, in a thrilling results show organised by this year’s hosts, OGAE Australia.

OGAE UK’s representatives were the one and only Steps, with their song Scared of the Dark, who topped the poll with 230 points, almost 60 points ahead of second placed Eleni Foureira, representing Greece with Vasilissa. Completing the Top 3 podium was Ireland’s Kodaline in third place, with 154 points.

In addition to Eleni, there were a number of former Eurovision participants taking part this year, including Marco Mengoni, Joci Papi, Cleo, Franka, and Lea Srk, alongside Melodifestivalen regulars Samir & Viktor.

OGAE Australia hosted this year’s contest following Dami Im‘s victory in the 2017 contest. Steps’ win means that OGAE UK is now proud and delighted to be hosting the 2019 OGAE Song Contest.

The OGAE Song Contest is an annual event organised by OGAE International in which OGAE clubs compete with an original song released in their countries. The song has to have been released in the last twelve months and sung in one of the country’s national languages. The first ever OGAE Song Contest took place in 1986 and has been an annual event ever since.

2018 marks OGAE UK’s fifth victory in the competition, following wins in 2002 (Kate Winslet‘s “What If”), followed by back to back wins in 2009 (Coldplay: Viva La Vida), 2010 (Freemasons Ft Sophie Ellis Bextor: Heartbreak) and 2011 (Adele: Someone Like You). The inaugural OGAE Song Contest was in 1986, when Juliane Werding won for Germany with Stimmen in Wind.

Thank you OGAE Australia…. and congratulations Steps!
